The fundamental reality of church is that, just because you are a Christian or because you go to Church is not a guarantee that everything will be so fresh and so clean. There is an aspect to following Jesus that is gritty... and just because Jesus is in the boat with you doesn't mean that you are going to be safe.
It makes me sad to think that there are people all around us who would think to themselves, "I am not valuable", "my life isn't worth it..." and the church is usually too busy looking good, too busy worrying about our reputation. We can't believe in a Jesus that is about setting the world right if you, yourself, can't stand with the broken. The Church needs Jesus as much as the world.
As we look through the Gospel of Jesus... who is he being seen with? This is why I find the Gospel of Jesus so compelling... that he constantly is standing with the unclean... that he is constantly loving the unlovable... there is something about Jesus that would make a demon possessed man be set free... and there is something about Jesus... that can give a woman with an embarrassing sickness... to be made clean and set-free.
